One of the favorite gifts for Valentine’s Day is red roses … the more the better! And boy, does the Virtual Museum have a lot of roses for you! Roses are not only a favorite scent, their image is used by perfume and vanity item vendors to symbolize romance.

What do the different colors of roses signify? Answers vary, but generally include:

Red: The traditional Valentine’s Day flower, red roses symbolize love, romance, and passion

White: A symbol of purity, innocence, and loyalty

Orange: Represent life, energy, passion, and excitement

Pink: Express admiration, gratitude, femininity, and elegance

Yellow: Symbolize friendship, joy, and gladness

Purple: Can symbolize enchantment, love at first sight, or sincerity

Green: Represent renewal, fertility, and rejuvenation

Black: Symbolize death and passing away, but also a new birth and confidence
