What makes a perfume bottle impossible to ignore? According to legendary designer Marc Rosen, the bottle must become a “silent salesman”—capturing attention, inviting someone to pick it up, and ultimately helping sell the fragrance. Rosen shared that philosophy, along with fascinating stories from his extraordinary career, during a special live interview hosted by the International Perfume Bottle Association (IPBA) on September 2.
Interviewed by Terri Chappell-Boyd, IPBA Immediate Past President, Rosen took viewers behind the scenes of a career that has helped shape modern fragrance packaging. He recalled his first perfume bottle design for Avon, his years at Revlon and Elizabeth Arden, and his collaborations with some of fashion’s most celebrated names, including Karl Lagerfeld and the Fendi sisters.
Rosen also discussed his award-winning designs, including seven prestigious FIFI Awards, his celebrated porcelain collections for Elizabeth Arden inspired by historic palaces and stately homes, and the creative process behind transforming an idea into a bottle that communicates the personality of a fragrance.
Throughout the interview, Rosen brought to life the glamour of an extraordinary era in the fragrance and beauty industry—traveling the world, attending spectacular fragrance launches, working alongside legendary fashion designers and beauty executives, and experiencing firsthand the excitement surrounding the introduction of a new fragrance. His stories offered a rare glimpse into a time when fragrance, fashion, design and glamour came together on a truly international stage.
The conversation also touched on Rosen’s book, Glamour Icons: Perfume Bottle Design, his work teaching the next generation of designers at Pratt Institute, and his upcoming design symposium at the Asia Society in New York.
The September 2 interview was part of the IPBA’s continuing series of virtual educational programs bringing collectors, designers, historians, industry professionals and fragrance enthusiasts together from around the world.
The recorded interview will be available on the International Perfume Bottle Association’s YouTube channel following editing and approval.
