The shopping alone is worth attending our convention. This is an incredible and multi-faceted experience. We host the annual Perfume Bottles Auction, an exciting live auction with celebrity, Nick Dawes, from the Antiques Roadshow as our auctioneer. The auction is directed by Ken Leach, world renown expert and author of Perfume Presentation 100 Years of Artistry, offering the crème de la crème of perfume bottle and vanity items. We also host the longest running and largest one of its kind the Vintage Vanity Show and Sale which is an experience for lovers of perfume bottles and vanity items that is off the charts. This is a showroom full of gorgeous treasures that will dazzle you and make wonderful additions to your collection. Our dealers offer the finest in beauty and quality when it comes to vintage vanity items. In recent years we have included dealers offering contemporary one of a kind items by the actual artist – both beautiful and original. Occasionally, we have exquisite contemporary perfumers join in on the fun such as Lalique or Guerlain. Another shopping experience we enjoy at the convention is at our Collectors Market. This is an event where our members get together and sell items from their personal collections. This is the place to be if you are looking for a bargain and the quality of the items is amazing.
The convention includes many different learning opportunities. Our three-part Symposium is loaded with presentations full of information and history about different topics from English Cameo perfumes or Art Deco Ephemera to Italian Compacts. Each topic is generally a full one-hour educational event with a presenter and slide show. Vanity Table Talks are another way we share in learning experiences. These are casual, round table talks about specific topics with a facilitator lasting about 40 minutes. The facilitator may bring items or pictures to share and everyone is welcome to ask questions or join in with their experiences. Some upcoming topics will be Magazine Advertising, Enamels, Opera perfume bottles, Egyptian perfume bottles and Inventorying Your Collection. We are honored to have a guest Keynote speaker at our luncheon or dinner event. This is someone brought in with a specialty or unique situation and they address the membership with their story. In 2021 we are looking forward to Véronique Coty as our Keynote speaker. Véronique is the great granddaughter of François Coty who is known as the father of modern perfume and collaborated with René Lalique for his first perfume bottle design. Everyone is approachable and welcoming so don’t be shy to talk with our presenters or other members. Treasurers Found is an event where members bring in items from their collection with questions about the item. The owner may not know what it is or may just want to know something special about it. We have a panel of experts that will give their opinions and the audience may know information as well. We do not give out price estimates and focus on information.
We sponsor a Perfume Bottle and Design Competition that anyone, not just members, may enter. We have been sponsoring this event for the last five years and have had entries from all over the world. The top ten finalist will ship their original creations to our convention. Those attending the convention will be able to see these talented artists work and vote on a winner. The winner will be announced at the convention.
We offer tours of some of the special local area attractions for those coming in a day or two early. We have an orientation session for first-time attendees. Where they will meet other first-time attendees, a mentor if they want one and the Board of Directors. There are volunteer opportunities to help with registration or the raffle. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people. We have an annual raffle where the items are donated by our generous members and local area businesses. We do enjoy some culinary events such as receptions before the Auction and Grand Opening of the Vintage Vanity Show and Sale along with a luncheon or dinner for the Keynote event.
There is so much more to enjoy at our conventions that you must attend to truly embrace it. Each convention is slightly different from the one before and they just keep getting better and better. Most of us come for the collecting but leave with friends we cherish for life.
